On
this Navy Base in Puerto Rico, there is a cave up in the
Magotes. Within the cave is this stalagmite upon which are
Pre-Columbian petroglyphs believed to have been carved by
the local Tiano tribe over 3000 years ago. My job was to
go caving with the archaeologists, take pictures and measurements
in order to reproduce the stalagmite in fiberglass as part
of a larger display there in the Housing Office.
Based
on my reference gathered in the cave, the model was sculpted
with foam, paper mache, and clay. A mold was then made and
the form was cast in fiberglass, painted with vinyl acrylics,
and clear-coated with Matthews polyurethane.
